There was a time when the village school all trooped up to church on Ascension Day, and was then released to play. So I suppose to previous generations of children the Ascension had good associations; perhaps of holiday and Spring happiness.
Today it is no longer the case, and indeed for many Christians, celebrating the Feast of the Ascension is an almost forgotton event. In our Team of churches however, this Ascension (May 17th), we will mark the day with an evening Eucharist at St Andrew’s, followed by refreshments and a social gathering.

“You really enjoy singing, don’t you?” someone remarked today. Yes I do, and count myself lucky to be able to sing, however inadequately. As I write this letter, the children of Little Hadham School will be making their way to the
Royal Albert Hall to sing in the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala. Other children from our local schools may well be going also: I hope they really enjoy the experience. Coincidentally, the previous evening I enjoyed watching a Songs of
Praise northern choir competition. The sheer joy on the children’s faces was wonderful to see. Long may singing remain an important part of the teaching in schools, even if squeezed out of the national curriculum!

“Whatsoever is spoken of God, or things appertaining to God, otherwise than as the truth is, though it seems an honour, it is an injury. And as incredible praises given unto men do often abate and impair the credit of their deserved commendation; so we must likewise take great heed, lest, in attributing unto Scripture more than it can have, the incredibility of that do cause even those things which it hath most abundantly, to be less reverently esteemed.” – Richard Hooker, “Laws of ecclesiastical polity”.
Let me translate: “Claim too much, and you may lose everything, even the most valuable and vital that you have to give.”

Herts County Council will soon be asking local people their views about the bypass and which route it should follow.
There will be an exhibition in Little Hadham Village Hall Thursday 8th and Friday 9th March, 3:30 to 8:30 pm, and Saturday 10th March 10 am to 2 pm. The exhibition will include plans and possibly 3D pictures giving some idea of what the various routes will look like. There will be experts to try to answer any questions you might have.
