Hello to all in the Hadhams. I am doing some genealogical research and recently discovered that some of my ancestors came from your area.

My 3rd Great Grandfather Frances Fuller, born in Hallingham Essex, married Ann Cundale ( born in 1811 in Standon ) in 1840 in Much Hadham Church . He was then a butcher and she was a beer house keeper. Both were listed as living in Much Hadham in the 1840's although they moved to London by 1851.

Ann was listed at the time of her marriage as a widow , and judging by the name of her father, her original maiden name was Batt.

Her father was joseph Batt born in 1776 was mostly found in the censuses at Standon and his occupation were a retired victualler, a proprietor of houses and living on independent means.

His wife was called Esther and they had at least one other child, a daughter named Esther who married a man named john Cairns.

I would be very grateful for any information at all on any of these names.

Hi Ted,
Are you sure of the spelling of the surname Cundale as it looks a little bit of a coincidence that she was a beer house keeper and the Angel pub in little Hadham at Ash was kept for much of the nineteenth century by Henry Cundall and then by his widow Susannah Cundall?

Also a bit of a coincidence with our surnames!! I lived in Little hadham from the age of 2 but my family were originally from Whitechapel and east London. Where do you hale from?

Regards

Hi Neil

actually the name is more likely to be cundall than cundale, reading is difficult from a marriage certificate.

But Ann married into the cundall's and is stated as a widow on the marriage cert. Her father on the same cert is listed as Batt.

in the 1871 census she is living in standon as a lodging house keeper at Stansfield house with an Elizabeth Cundall living with her as her granddaughter.

My email is ted.at.stocktons,org.uk

I doubt we are connected though as all these hertfordshire folk are on my mothers side , the stocktons I am descended from are from Dublin arriving in Manchester in the 1850's

Thanks for any info you may have.

Ted
